Rebecca Erskine of Upper Hunter regional Conservatorium wrote:
The Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music was thrilled to have the Janet Seidel Trio visit Muswellbrook in February for a workshop with local vocalists and a public concert, as part of its 2013 Visiting Artists Series funded by Arts NSW.
The workshop was a really enjoyable and rewarding experience for all the participants, who brought varying vocal styles and levels of experience and training to the workshop. Janet, Dave and Chuck all contributed to the participants’ understanding and development of jazz vocal techniques, encouraging participation and confidence. All participants benefited greatly from Janet’s experience and advice, and indicated they would participate again in future workshops with Janet.
The public concert was a real treat for attendees. The Janet Seidel Trio was engaging, exciting and inspiring. They are such skilful musicians and it was great to be able to offer Muswellbrook residents an opportunity to experience an evening of quality, professional jazz music. Janet Seidel is described as, ‘Australia’s first lady of jazz singing’, and she certainly lived up to the reputation. The group performed a wide range of music, including familiar jazz standards as well as introducing the audience to some less known tunes. Everyone left the concert raving about the experience and we do hope to have the Janet Seidel Trio return to the Upper Hunter for more concerts and workshops in the future.
After a ukelele workshop in Cootamundra: Cathy Ashcroft writes:
Cootamundra recently had the pleasure of having Janet Seidel and the boys perform at our Arts Centre… a wonderful night was had by all who attended.
During the day preceding the show Chuck Morgan lead a Ukulele workshop with some of our local, budding, music enthusiast. It was a huge success, so I thought I would share some of the comments made by the students.
My Thoughts on Chuck's Uke Workshop:
- Chuck had a delightful, encouraging manner with the whole group, which was made up of school-age children and teenagers (plus one old bloke)
- He used a thoughtful balance of theory and practice, and was quick to highlight player's efforts
- He quickly assessed the different ability levels among the group, and gave each player appropriate tasks
- With one tune, Chuck organised the various participants to play different parts, with a very satisfying, multi-layered result
- Having never touched a ukulele before, I now feel confident that I could manage a tune without too much trouble
"I was really inspired by Chuck's ukulele session. Chuck brought us all together and had us playing as a good sounding group in no time at all. Chuck's uke playing is amazing and I hope I can play as well as that myself one day. I look forward to the next time Chuck comes to town - Thanks for a great musical time!"
- Kristoffer Berg
"I've only been playing a very short time, but I have learnt new chords and skills that I can put into practice from Chuck's helpful advice. It was great to see everyone having such a great time playing as a group with Chuck's guidance. I've had a memorable time - Thankyou Chuck!"
- Natalie Berg
The ukulele workshop was a great learning experience for me. Chuck was really interesting and taught me several new techniques which I hadn't known before. He incorporated theory with practical and allowed me to appreciate how wonderful the ukulele is. In the workshop we learnt various songs and had the privilege of listening to Chuck's awesome ukulele soloing. Chuck was able to include all of us and was a great mentor.
After a singers master-class in Brisbane:
"The Janet Seidel Trio Workshop (ukelele/guitar, bass, piano/vocal) held in Brisbane on Saturday 27th October 2012 was a huge success.
I've been running and facilitating local workshops for visiting touring artists for many years and this workshop was by far one of the most
engaging, supportive and productive of them all. Janet Seidel, Dave Seidel and Chuck Morgan's individual and collective experience
made this 3 hour workshop fly by, leaving singers of all levels feeling satisfied either through reaffirming their own knowledge or learning
important skills on how to progress musically in the competitive world of jazz. Singers left the workshop with strategies on how to communicate
to musicians, start and finish songs, how to lead an arrangement with their voices, phrasing, rhythm and some valuable tips on recording and the
business." Ingrid James, Jazz Singer/Voice Educator, Brisbane, Australia
Very soon wherever the Janet Seidel trio appears in concert,
we will be offering a 2 hour workshop/master class for interested musicians and singers.
Numbers are limited to 10 students per group.
There will be the chance for individual lessons as well.
It is also possible to arrange one on one lessons with Chuck Morgan (guitar/ukelele)
David Seidel (acoustic double bass, electric bass guitar).
